A series of dialogues between the Gods about the fate of men and women, love and mortality set in the Tuscan landscape.

Proposta in Quattro Parti (Proposal in Four Parts)  was a commission for Italian public television and it is a montage in four movements:  the Biograph short A Corner in Wheat, directed by D. W. Griffith in 1909, which deals with the capitalist exploitation of land, the rise in wheat prices and its effects on the poor, is followed by excerpts from the filmmakers’ own films Moses and Aaron, Fortini/Cani and From the Cloud to the Resistance.

In Quei loro incontri (These Encounters of Theirs), Huillet and Straub return to Dialogues with Leucò by Cesare Pavese twenty-seven years after their film From the Cloud to the Resistance. Pavese’s book reimagines myth as the collective memory of a piece of history buried and distant, through dialogues between mythical figures about mortality, love, and the destiny of men and women. Every detail in these carefully composed sequences requires our attention as the film creates its tension from the elements at play, the sounds of nature and the forceful recitation of the actors, thus reinvesting the words of Pavese with a new and urgent meaning.

These Encounters of Theirs will be shown as new 35mm print.
