An exceptional film by Jean Renoir filmed in 1943 and set in the midst of World War II. Charles Laughton plays a timid middle-aged schoolteacher who is drawn into the Resistance, standing up to the Nazis. The film is an openly polemical parable about the need to resist in times of oppression. Renoir affirmed his films of the period ‘breathed the breath of anti-Fascism’ appealing to a common sense of brotherhood and solidarity.
