Konrad Wolf is considered one of the most important filmmakers of the German Democratic Republic. His work, which is characterised by a profound examination of German history and the present, has gained recognition far beyond the borders of the GDR and remains relevant to this day. To mark his 100th birthday, the DEFA Foundation is dedicating an anniversary year to the director, focusing on his cinematic legacy.

The Konrad Wolf Year 2025 marks a historic turning point: 80 years after the end of the Second World War, collective memory is beginning to change – from the communicative memory of contemporary witnesses to cultural memory, as described by cultural scientists Jan and Aleida Assmann. In this context, the Goethe-Institut Glasgow and the University of St Andrews invite you to rediscover Wolf's films and reflect on how history is perpetuated through images and narratives.

As part of this exploration, we are showing a four-part film series, curated by Professor Seán Allan, that places Konrad Wolf's work in the context of contemporary memory culture. The series is part of the programme ‘80 Years: Past, Present – Future?’, which examines how memory is shaped today – and what role cinema plays in this process.
