Join us for a screening of eight unique films by members of LaborBerlin, followed by a talk with Jules Leaño and Sophie Watzlawick. Curated by Lydia Beilby.

LaborBerlin is a collective artist run filmlab, where members can experiment with analogue film practices. A place where traditional practices are kept alive and explored, but also subverted, remixed and hacked with modern technology to push the boundaries of the medium. With projections of fboth digital scans and 16mm prints, this programme celebrates the past, present and future of experimental cinema and the infinite possibilities of film on film.

Jules Leaño and Sophie Watzlawick will be joining us from Berlin to talk about their work at the collective, and the magic of celluloid in a digital age.

Expanding Cinema is an Edinburgh University Research Cluster that brings together researchers working with artists’ moving image and experimental cinema. It offers a platform for researchers, practitioners, and public audiences to respond critically and discursively to aesthetically, formally inventive, and radical filmmaking that seeks to engage with the complexities of our times. Our activities include events in which members can share and discuss works-in-progress in a supportive environment, and a year-round programme of public events, including film screenings, and in-conversation session with filmmakers and guest speakers.

Join us at the University of Edinburgh on Thursday 30 October for a screening of eight unique films by members of LaborBerlin, followed by a talk with Jules Leaño and Sophie Watzlawick.
