Beppa Tori

Winarni Kamaluddin, ST - @winslicious, Makassar

This typical snack from South Sulawesi has different names: beppa tori, deppa tori or deppa tettekang. Unfortunately, the shape of the snack is not very photogenic. A piece is the size of a finger, and when they are lined up you can see that some are quite irregular. Beppa tori has a dark brown color and is usually rounded off with a pinch of sesame.

But don’t be fooled: it tastes really good. Once you’ve tried it, it’s hard to stop. Especially when you have a typical Toraja coffee in your hand. The sweetness comes from brown sugar. Rice flour and sesame also add texture. Deep frying makes beppa tori crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. And it’s exactly this taste combination that makes it so special.
