Contemporary experimental music

Uwalmassa combines field recordings with live instruments in their performances. In nonconventional compositions, the musicians place typical Indonesian music traditions in global contexts and reinterpret them. Through the combination of different musical genres and in extraordinary compositions, they explore the dynamics of Indonesian identity.

Uwalmassa is an outgrowth of DIVISI62, a label for electronic music and art that examines issues of Indonesian identity in a global context in its productions. Uwalmassa first appeared on the scene in September 2016 with the release of Bumi Uthiti, a two-track mini-album that experimented with Javanese gamelan and was recorded within one day. In March 2018 DIVISI62 released the mini-album Animisme containing four tracks, one of them by Uwalmassa. The album explores the various keys and rhythmic structures of Indonesian music influenced by dangdut, pencak silat and Sundanese gamelan.

In addition to a few concerts in Jakarta, Uwalmassa has had live performances as part of the Europalia Festival in Europe, including in the Berlin Berghain club. Their music is regularly featured in remixes and podcasts on NTS Radio (London) and Red Light Radio (Amsterdam).

In the Alur Bunyi series, the Goethe-Institut presents and discusses contemporary positions of experimental (not just) electronic music from Indonesia and Germany. This year's edition of Alur Bunyi is curated by Gerald Situmorang.
