Games and Politics

Interactive exhibition of digital games

Whether computer games are seen as a political issue, as an entertainment medium or even as art, depends completely on the context. That fact that every game is being created within a unique society and at a specific time, leads to the conclusion that every game can tell us something about its context. With this in mind, actually every computer game is political. The players are always staying within the games system and have to follow its rules – even if they seem to give orders and act autonomously. Apart from that, games are also political if they knowingly try to make political topics accessible for otherwise hard-to-reach target groups – for political education or also propaganda.

Games and Politics as an interactive exhibition brings together sixteen games, which show a skillful integration of political topics within digital gaming and will encourage you to play as well as to reflect. All the games can be played in the exhibition, whether on a tablet, smartphone or at the computer.

While playing these games, the players are confronted with a wide range of political issues: Precarious working conditions (SUNSET) will just as well be a topic like the aftermath of armed conflicts (THIS WAR OF MINE), migration and refugees (PAPERS, PLEASE!, ESCAPE FROM WOOMERA) or governmental surveillance (TOUCHSTONE).

A series of compelling events which will give convinced gamers, digital newbies and people interested in politics the chance to play, reflect, discuss and be creative will accompany the exhibition.
