Goethe-Institut Bandung has organized a virtual book club every month from September through December 2022 in cooperation with Bbbbookclub and the German studies departments of various local universities in Bandung. The aim is to present contemporary literature from Germany that has already been translated into Indonesian, to promote regional studies, and to talk about overarching themes such as social inequality and family relations and care from different perspectives. The series is designed for all those interested in literature and German—students, pupils and learners of German as well as those planning on working as professionals in Germany.

In September the book club reads and discusses the book Träume Wohnen Überall by Carolin Philipps. This young adult novel takes place in Bucharest, Romania, and is concerned with juvenile homelessness, social inequality and the different dreams of young people. The story is about the friendship between Sandale, who has been living on the street for years, and Martin from Austria, who suffers because of his parent’s separation and who is doing an internship in a social care unit.

In this reading, the themes of social inequality and empathy in German society present in Träume Wohnen Überall will be discussed with Ratu Dwi Nabilah Roosiantia, FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr – Voluntary Social Year) alumni, and Irma Permatawati, M.Pd. from UPI’s German language teaching program to offer an academic perspective.

During the event, the participants will take turns reading passages from the book and will discuss the content. Meita Eryanti and Puty Puar from “Buibu Baca Buku Book Club” will moderate the discussion. Invited guests are Ratu Dwi Nabilah Roosiantia, FSJ alumni (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) and Irma Permatawati, M.Pd. from the UPI language teaching program.

Registration is now available until 15 September 2022 at this link:
