From September to December 2022, Goethe-Institut Bandung organizes a virtual reading club (Leseclub) which is held every month in collaboration with Bbbbookclub and German Language Study Programs from various universities in Bandung.
Regularly held since 2021, the Reading Club aims to introduce modern German literature that has been translated into Indonesian. Beyond books, these virtual discussions also talk about the broader themes related to books and their relationship to culture and life in Germany such as films, grief, and social inequality.
This November reading club will be discussing the book 'Mein Wunderschöner Schutzengel: Als Nellys Mama Krebs Cupping' or 'My Wonderful Guardian Angel: When Mama Sicked with Cancer' by Kerstin Hermelink. This book tells the story of Nelly, a girl who remembers the days when her mother was diagnosed with cancer and required to undergo surgery and a series of treatments. Through this story of mother and daughter, we would see a portrait of a family trying to get through difficult times through the eyes of a 7-year-old girl.
In this activity, participants will take turns reading excerpts from the book 'My Amazing Guardian Angel: When Mama Is Sick of Cancer' and discuss it guided by Puty Puar. Meita Eryanti from BBBBookclub will present a review of this book.
After discussing the book, the discussion will continue with the topic of children's stories, family portraits, and parenting in Germany, and how this is reflected in German books and literature. In this event, we invite Diana Scheib, a mother of German-Indonesian descent, and friends from Pustakalana, Children's Library and Open Space which has been running since 2015 in Bandung, which is not for profit and runs with the spirit of volunteerism.
Registration is now available until 17 November 2022 at this link:
