What happens when improvisation becomes not just a method, but a way of living and creating?

In this open and interactive lecture-performance, musician, composer-performer and improviser Biliana Voutchkova invites us into her practice—where sound, body, intuition, and space intersect. Based in Berlin, Voutchkova is recognised for her expansive sonic explorations and long-duration performances that stem from deep internal connections and physical responsiveness. She will share her artistic reflections, creative processes, and how improvisation forms the core of both her aesthetic and personal approach.

The session will close with a spontaneous collaborative performance involving audience members, inviting collective sound-making as a shared, living experience.

This programme is part of the Threshold, where she acts as an impulse—leading mentoring sessions and a music clinic with five selected musicians and artists from diverse disciplines and instrumental backgrounds. With an open and reflective approach to improvisation, Biliana shares her artistic practice rooted in the relationship between body, space, and sound. In this session, she invites participants to explore experimental music-making as a form of dialogue across identities and experiences of migration. Biliana Voutchkova’s presence is not merely a solo performance, but part of a wider artistic and pedagogical exchange, creating a dynamic space of sharing between artists and the public through a performative lecture and live collaboration. This programme plays a key role in connecting artistic exploration, improvisational learning, and interdisciplinary encounters across communities.
