This event brings together food, land, and local knowledge as interconnected practices shaped by everyday life in Bali. Zelin Seah invites participants to engage with local ingredients commonly used in daily food and beverages, tracing how plants travel, circulate, and carry cultural meaning. Through this process, the movement of plants is read alongside the movement of people, labour, and culture, shaping questions of identity and rootedness.
Prinka will share a case study from her research on the relationships between plants, land, and local knowledge as practiced through food and textile. Made Masak will lead a megibung (communal eating) practice, simulating roles and responsibilities in the distribution of food as an exercise in justice toward land, food, and plants as offering a way to practice balance (laras–selaras) in everyday life.
Set against ongoing shifts in land use driven by tourism and development, the event asks a central question: who gets to speak about and on the land? By foregrounding knowledge held in bodies, kitchens, backyards, and communal tables, the program invites collective reflection on balance, responsibility, and our relationship with nature as not as something separate from us, but as something we are part of.
