Planar is a series of contemporary art exhibitions initiated by the Goethe-Institut in Bandung. The name “Planar,” refers to the site-specific nature of the project–being situated in a space of open plane within the Goethe-Institut Bandung area. Curated by Yacobus Ari Respati, this project invites progressive young artists from Bandung to create engaging projects & artworks, working in unison within the boundaries of the space while communicating and expressing a diverse range of most actual, contextual, and critical themes of contemporary life and art in Indonesia. Planar project itself portrays the array of methods, concerns, and emergent forces borne in their practice of artmaking; while bridging cultural connections with the global context. The promotion and support for cultural production in such manner, is what the Goethe-Institut share as a necessary view amidst current flux and shifts of the world.
Fajar Abadi
Actively producing works of performance, happenings, and participatory art; Fajar Abadi is one of few Indonesian artists who persists with the use dematerialized medium. Rather than creating direct radical sensations or novel plethora of sensory perception, Fajar often emphasizes what he perceive as an embedded performativity that is native to man’s daily, subconscious behavior. Central to his work, the idea disseminates through his portrayal of daily rites and objects, which puts the viewers to examine the layers of relationships between subjects in minute, subtle details–which are oftentimes overlooked. In his work for the exhibition, the aptly titled “Kudapan Petang,” or “Afternoon Snacks,” Fajar attempts to portray the theme which surrounds snacks in the local, particular context–as object of food item carrying itself a narrative of symbols.
