Sharing Session Art Spaces and Communities as Alternative Education System

Residensi Kurator © Sabiha Keyif

GoetheHaus Jakarta

in cooperation with OK. Video

Curator-in-residence Sabiha Keyif spent the whole month of November as residency host of OK. Video. Due to her limited time in Indonesia, she was only able to visit four cities in the country, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. However, the curator’s interest in contemporary art as a reflection on social issues and the connection between art and technology perfectly matched OK. Video’s concern on how the development of media technology has affected people’s perspective and behavior towards their surrounding.

In order to get to know and understand the diverse and heterogeneous Indonesia better, Sabiha had intimate encounters and conversations with various curators, artists, researchers, designers, performers and cultural workers with a focus on contemporary art, new media, technology, social design and indigenous culture. She also had the opportunity to visit unique spaces and attend events that featured interesting performances.

At the end of her residency, Sabiha will give an insight into her previous curatorial projects and share her thoughts on contemporary art spaces as an alternative for an education system, based on the experience during her residency in Indonesia. MG Pringgotono from Serrum – an artist collective that focuses on educational, socio-political and urban issues with an educational and artistic presentation approach - will respond to her presentation and talk about art education and knowledge issues in Indonesia as well as Serrum’s concerns, such as art projects, research methods, collaboration, participation and activation.

The presentation will be followed by informal discussion.

Through its residency programs, the Goethe-Institut aims to provide and open a space for new perspectives, where curators, artists and cultural workers have the opportunity to live and work in another country and another culture for an extended period of time. In the age of globalisation, it is particularly inspiring for curators, artists and cultural workers to ground their works in specific and real places and to temporarily pursue their projects free from economic considerations, as well as to build or strengthen their professional network.

Sabiha Keyif graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig, Germany in 2012 and has since worked as curator and project manager at ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany.

MG Pringgotono graduated from Universitas Negeri Jakarta in 2008. Together with several friends, he founded Serrum while he was still studying. Serrum is an artist collective that focuses on educational, socio-political and urban issues with an educational and artistic presentation approach. He also works as an artist, curator, exhibition designer and producer.
