“Youth is a universal subject; photography is a universal language."
– Jörg Brüggemann and Tobias Kruse

we will have been young features new works about youth and future by twelve young photographers from eight Southeast Asian countries. The photo essays capture a socio-cultural kaleidoscope of the life of young people in the vibrant context of economic progress and globalization in the photographers' home countries of Southeast Asia. The visual stories deal with diverse issues - online dating and the transformation of relationships, illnesses and their psychological effects, family constellations and identities, nostalgia and transience, social housing and urbanization, psycho-social challenges, the marginalization of Aboriginal people, homosexuality and the search for a sense of belonging, club scenes as a sign of revolt, creative Vespa clubs, gender-identity in school children, abuse and the longing for a feeling of home.

we will have been young showcases works by Alvin Lau (Malaysia), Amrita Chandradas (Singapore), Dennese Victoria (Phillipines), Dwi Asrul Fajar (Indonesia), Elliott Koon (Malaysia), Geric Cruz (Phillipines), Kanel Khiev (Cambodia), Lee Chang Ming (Singapore), Linh Pham (Vietnam), Muhammad Fadli (Indonesia), Watsamon Tri-yasakda (Thailand) and Yu Yu Myint Than (Myanmar).

The projects presented in this exhibition are the result of the Southeast Asian Photography Masterclass at OBSCURA Festival Of Photography 2016 and 2017, supervised by Tobias Kruse and Jörg Brüggemann from photography agency Ostkreuz (Berlin). The works were developed over the course of a year. The exhibition was launched at the OBSCURA Festival Of Photography 2017 in Malaysia, is currently travelling in Southeast Asia and onwards to the Asia-Pacific region and Germany. A photobook of the same title as the group exhibition with the complete series is available.

we will have been young is a programme by OBSCURA Festival Of Photography, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and Ostkreuz Agentur der Fotografen, supported by Komunitas Salihara.
