DEKADEN will open with two critically acclaimed German films of most recent decades that depict two female protagonists living and working independently in this contemporary world.

Toni Erdmann is writer/director Maren Ade’s black comedy about Ines’ (Sandra Hüller) strenuous relationship to her father Winfried Conradi (Peter Simonischek). Amidst her business networking events in Bucharest, Ines must deal with his father’s attempts to reestablish their connection, which include appearing with shaggy wig and buck teeth, obviously not helping at all with her climbing corporate ladder as a business consultant.

Undine is Christian Petzold's fascinating reinterpretation of the myth of the mysterious mermaid Undine, who can only live an earthly life through the love of a human being: a modern fairy tale in a disenchanted world, the story of a love for life and death.
Both stories are taking place in so called urban metropolises where humans are challenged to be human. Whether we are looking at Undine (Paula Beer), a city historian explaining about the expansion of Berlin, or at Ines being anxious about the result of globalization, we cannot help but being empathetic about their longing for affection and true acceptance.
