Sabine Müller studied Ethnology, Malay Language and Culture, and Sociology at the University of Cologne as well as Indonesian at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She also completed a postgraduate course of study in German as a Foreign Language at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. After completing her studies, she lived and worked for several years in Bandung and Jakarta, where she worked as an instructor and translator at the Polytechnical College in Cimahi and as a freelancer for the Language and Program Department at the Goethe-Institut.

Since returning to Germany, she has been living and working in Cologne as a freelance translator for Indonesian and English. She is also an editor of various online and print media and an instructor of Indonesian. As part of her commitment to Indonesian literature and literary translations, she moderates readings, seminars, and other event formats, including for Weltlesebühne e.V. Her translations of works by Indonesian authors include novels, plays, poems, and essays.

Beyond geographic and temporal boundaries, this mutual exchange brings to light more answers than questions that go through a translator’s mind and adds an innovative and enriching facet to the already intensive analysis of the literary work and its cosmos.
