Shen Xiliang studied German Language and Literature at Nanjing University. He has worked as a technical interpreter, translator, and project manager since 1988. He has been involved in many Chinese-German projects, including for SIEMAG, a German engineering company, as well as in the transportation technology sector for Shanghai Metro Corporation. Since July 2001, he has been employed with the Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Company.
   
Shen Xiliang is a member of the Chinese Writers’ Association. He has been translating German-language literature into Chinese since 1990. More than 30 of his translations have already been published in China, including works by Stefan Zweig, Elfriede Jelinek, Thomas Brezina, Claude Cueni, Herta Müller, Martin Suter, Christine Nöstlinger, and Ingrid Noll.
 
His Chinese translation of Der TV-Karl by Christine Nöstlinger was longlisted for the German-Chinese Translator Prize for Children’s and Youth Literature. He has received several scholarships from the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (LCB) and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, most recently for the translation of Bernhard Schlink’s Der Vorleser (The Reader). Shen Xiliang lives in Shanghai.
 

Shen Xiliang about Social Translating

For me, the social translating platform is therapeutic like a hospital. When I’m sick I go there to get treated with the right medication ― and Thomas the great doctor is always there.
