What comes to your mind when thinking about the food in Bangkok’s old town district?

Street food trendy spots, such as Yaowarat Road would undeniably become the top-of-mind choices that reflects the end of foodways from raw material origins to varieties of mouth watering menus in Bangkok. In fact, the story of food does not necessarily end on the dining table alone. Equally relevant to the dishes themselves are the ways of living that help sustain and conserve the existence of a particular Thai food culture. Such aspects of the story leaves room for fascinating yet unseen areas, waiting for many to explore!

On the occasion of Bangkok Design Week 2022, the youth forum with sheer interest in food and urban community development RTUS BKK cordially invited all the foodies who loves to dig in the history and culture behind food to trace the Bangkok foodways in the city walking tour Taste of Hua Lamphong:  Into the Transporting Food Hub The food tour guarantees a fulfilling culinary experience of exploring the old town food spots and the food hub around one of the oldest commuting junctions in Thailand.
The highlight of the trip includes
  • Hua Lamphong train station: The first and oldest grand terminal train station of Thailand, making it the perfect starting point to begin examining the intertwined relationship between ways of living, food and people.
  • Tun-kee Hotel: Despite no longer providing the service, the hotel was once the top secret meeting place for communist party led by Ho Chi Minh and served what can be considered as the most modern dishes at that time.
  • Playspace: Through the evolution the former paper factory and provisions inventory now turns into a vintage stylish cafe run by Nathanart Ontuam (Nanth) and Kanyarat Chotchayapinyo (Kui) the third generation of the family that owns the building who will be our guide for this spot.
  • Phadung Krung Kasem Canal: The canal has been a crucial passage for delivering fruits from Thonburi— the place where we will explore its influence from Hua Lamphong and what binds together these commuting junctions with food.
  • Trok Rong Moo: From being merely a swine slaughterhouse that received the livestock from Hua Lamphong, this small alley became the must-see place for restaurant hopping with numerous renowned street food dishes, such as Khao Moo Daeng, Pork Satay, spring rolls and so on.
  • Recordoffee: Get to know this well-known cafe that also sells vinyl record in Hua Lamphong district with a young entrepreneur in the old town district Alongod Uabhaibool (Book) who owns and runs the place.
The food enthusiasts that still yearn for a more culinary journey can also register for Chef’s table course ‘Soundbite Supper Club: Hua Lamphong taste, The Journey to Hua Lamphong’ from Kittisak Hengphraphrom (Tum) and Alongod Uabhaibool (Book)  that serves you the special dining experience through the series of menus exclusively designed for inspired by this trip.
