Voices of the World Cup

Calling all high school students in the USA! The Goethe-Institut invites you to participate in Voices of the World Cup, our nationwide online commentator competition celebrating the FIFA World Cup coming to North America.

Soccer thrives on emotion, team spirit, and unforgettable moments. This competition gives you the chance to commentate on iconic moments from German national team history and show the world how you experience the game. Choose one of two provided video clips, record a 30 to 60 second commentary in German, and submit your video online before May 4th, 2026.

Whether you are a seasoned German speaker or still building your skills, this is your chance to put your language abilities to the test, connect with soccer culture, and make your voice heard!  

The top three videos will be awarded an all expenses paid trip to the the German Day of Soccer event in New York City on June 22nd (program details TBC) and a soccer fan package

Choose one of two provided video clips and select a 30-60 second moment to make your own:

• 2014 World Cup Final
• 1954 World Cup Final

Participants choose one of two provided soccer video clips to commentate on. Using the clip as their reference, they then record themselves delivering a short commentary of 30 to 60 seconds in German. The submission should be a video of the participant commentating, not a voiceover of the soccer clip itself, and must be uploaded online in portrait format.

Videos will be evaluated by a jury based on the following criteria:

• Linguistic creativity and comprehensibility (5 points)
• Commentary talent (emotion, timing, etc.) (5 points)
• Originality (5 points)
• Connection to soccer culture and storytelling (5 points)
