Whether on the field, in the stadium, or in the media — football is a real language engine. This workshop focuses entirely on idioms, expressions, and specific vocabulary related to the world's most popular sport. Together, we explore how football has shaped the German language — from legendary commentaries to fixed phrases used in everyday life.
Teachers will learn how to integrate these linguistic elements into lessons in an age-appropriate and level-differentiated way. It’s not just about vocabulary lists, but about creative, communicative teaching ideas where learners experience language in context — for example, through role-plays, interviews, text analyses, or short sports reports.
The workshop also shows how football language can be a motivating springboard to decode cultural codes, promote media literacy, and sharpen language awareness — with plenty of room for humor, emotions, and genuine communication.

This workshop is eligible to receive professional development hours or graduate-level credits through our partner Idioma Education & Consulting. Visit goethe.de/usa/idioma for more information.
