Whether it’s the stadium anthem, fan chants, or the official World Cup song—football is inseparably linked with music. In this workshop, we explore how songs related to football can be used in German as a Foreign Language (DaF) classes to spark linguistic, cultural, and creative learning processes.
The focus is on didactically prepared lessons about well-known football songs and fan anthems, their linguistic features, and their cultural significance—from the collective experience in the stadium to the musical reflection of social issues. Together, we’ll look at fan chants and discuss what they reveal about community and belonging—and how this potential can be harnessed in the classroom.
As a practical component, we develop ideas for a creative lesson unit: “Our Fan Chant” — a musical group project where students write, perform, and discuss their own fan chant.
Music brings language to life, motivates, and connects people. This workshop provides tools and inspiration for a noticeably different kind of lesson.
