In this special online event, hosted by the team at the Goethe-Institut Mexico, poet José F. A. Oliver will present some of his poems and, together with author Mario Martín Gijón, discuss what it means to write poetry in today’s political context. They will explore how earlier poems gain new relevance in connection with the theme of migration and what visions and possibilities poetic and literary writing holds in light of new developments such as artificial intelligence.
The conversation will be interwoven with poetry readings, offering the audience a unique experience: hearing how critical reflection and literary creation illuminate each other.

Poet and author
José Oliver is a poet and essayist of Andalusian origin; he was born in Hausach (Black Forest, Germany) in 1961, where he still lives and works today. He also works as a literary translator of poetry, mainly from Spanish and into Spanish. He has been awarded the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize (1997), the Culture Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg (2007), the Basel Poetry Prize (2015), the Liliencron Lectureship (2019), and the Heinrich Böll Prize (2021), among others.
Mario Martín Gijón

Mario Martín Gijón, born in Villanueva de la Serena (Spain) in 1979, is a Spanish-language writer. Between 2004 and 2008, he taught Spanish language and literature at Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, and between 2008 and 2010 at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic). Since 2010, he has been teaching at the University of Extremadura (Spain). He has published several academic monographs, mainly on exile literature, and has also written numerous volumes of poetry, short stories, and novels, most recently La Pasión de Rafael Alconétar (Novelaberinto, 2021) and Restitución (2023).
In 2021, an anthology of his poems was published in Serbian, translated by Duska Radivojevic (Banja Luka/Belgrade, Petar Kocic Foundation). In 2022, the anthology Cuerpoemas, versb: leibend (Schiler & Mücke, Berlin/Tübingen) was published, translated into German by José F. A. Oliver, and in 2023, the bilingual anthology La chair des heures, translated into French by Miguel-Angel Real.
Other poems by him have been translated into Italian, Romanian, Polish, and Chinese and published in various magazines.
