Professor Martin Warnke Program
The residency program instituted by the Museo Nacional del Prado in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Madrid, offers one-month residency scholarships for doctorates and PhD students of art history.
The program, named after the distinguished art historian and professor Martin Warnke (1937-2019), a scholar of the work of authors present in the Prado collections such as Rubens, Velázquez and Goya, facilitates short study stays for academics and researchers with habitual residence in a country of the European Union.
Conditions of Funding
Doctorates and PhD students
- The program provides for a researcher to stay for four consecutive weeks.
- The duration of the stay is set for the period from 1 to 30 September. In exceptional cases, another period within the autumn quarter of 2025 may be considered, which must be indicated in the application to be considered by the jury.
- The selected scholar will receive a place to work at the Centro de Estudios of the Museo del Prado, special access hours for extended use of the library, archives and documentation, access to the databases and to the management and documentation systems of the Museo del Prado collection expressly authorised for the conduct of their studies, direct contact with the museum's academic community and access to the Prado campus.
- During the one-month stay, the selected researcher will be able to live free of charge in a flat provided by the Goethe-Institut Madrid, where they will also have access to a study room in case they need additional space to work.
- Applications are open to researchers working on their doctoral thesis or who already have a doctorate.
- Research in the field of art history or related disciplines whose projects are related to the collections of the Museo del Prado or deal with topics connected to them will be considered.
- There is no age limit.
- Those who have already completed this residency can apply again.
- To apply for a residency, you must be a permanent resident of a European Union country.
- The application deadline is April, 30th, 2025.
- Applications must be made by completing the application form.
- The form must be accompanied by a copy of your identity card or passport, a short CV and a summary of the research project of no more than 400 words.
- Only applications containing the documents requested on the form will be considered.
- Applications can be submitted in the following languages: Spanish, English and German.
A jury with representatives from the Museo del Prado and the Goethe-Institut Madrid will make a unanimous and definitive selection.
