Tabakalera Residency

Residency Open Call on art, science, technology and society for artists, creators, and cultural agents by Tabakalera - International Centre for Contemporary Culture in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Madrid. The eight-week residency will take place in San Sebastián from May 4 to July 5, 2026.

Conditions of funding

The call is open to artists, creators, and cultural agents who are willing to develop contemporary projects related to the ASTS field, partially or in their entirety, whether they have already developed their activity in said area, or because they wish to embark on a professional career in the sector. Applications are welcome from both international cultural workers living in Spain or Germany, as well as Spanish and German citizens.

For this call, projects submitted by several creators and/or collectives will not be accepted.

  • Return ticket from the artist's place of residence or from the place where the artist is located immediately prior to the residency, at the discretion of the successful applicant. Priority will be given to the most sustainable transport option.
  • Double room for single use with a bathroom, small work area, and Wi-Fi; shared access to a kitchen and living room. Access to this communal area may be regulated by the rules of use established by the centre. 
  • Medical insurance during the residency period should the candidate not be a European resident.
  • €1,300 per month of the residency, for per diem and living expenses, to be paid as a cheque payable in the name of the bearer. A withholding tax will be levied on this amount depending on the tax status of each resident. For this purpose, the corresponding documentation will be requested (form 036 for residents in Spain, and a tax residence certificate for residents abroad). In case of absence during the residency, this amount will be recalculated.
  • €1,000 (excluding taxes and deductions) as a fee upon presentation of an invoice within the corresponding deadline.
  • Workspace equipped with basic furniture, electrical outlets, and lighting within Tabakalera's artists' space as well as Wi-Fi internet access. The studio will be assigned taking into account the characteristics of the selected project.
  • Access to the office and communal areas.
  • Access to all Tabakalera resources, to Tabakalera's specialised creation library, and to Medialab's resources.
  • Access to image and sound editing studios, a performing arts practice space or set, and audiovisual  resources on loan.
  • Technical resources and assistance from the Tabakalera team, as needed and when available.
  • Allocation of additional financial support, up to a maximum of 2.500 Euro, upon submission of a budget and approval by Tabakalera, to cover minor expenses related to the production of a prototype, which must be used for the production and will not cover the acquisition of technological equipment or bibliographic materials. The amount
  • designated for production will be managed by the Tabakalera personnel assigned for this purpose. Tabakalera will not pay for any expenses incurred without prior consultation and approval by the team assigned for this purpose.
  • Conceptual and artistic guidance in developing the project, as well as help with introducing it to agents in the scientific and technological field with whom Tabakalera collaborates.

  • Innovation and originality. The extent to which the projectcontributes to ASTS activities and contexts, projects that show a special interest in Quantum will be especially valued.
  • The quality and creativity of the project.
  • The interest of the project from a scientific and technological point of view, and its capacity to stimulate collaboration between disciplines.
  • The consistency of the candidate's project, as well as its consistency throughout his or her career to date, both individually and collectively with other agents or artists.
  • The viability of the project and its adaptation to the resources of Tabakalera and its workspaces.

  • Inscription must be made through the Tabakalera website by completing the online form and attaching the following documentation:
  • Contact information: name, surname(s), postal address, email, and contact telephone number. An explanation of the project and the reason why the candidate wants to undertake this particular stage of the project during the residency at Tabakalera (between 500 and 1000 words).
  • Graphics and other material that help illustrate the work or project.
  • Presentation of at least four works developed previously, with images of each one of them.
  • A detailed approximate budget for the residency at Tabakalera and an estimate of everything needed for the project.
  • A rough work timetable.
  • A CV and short biography (500 words).
  • All documentation must be submitted in a single PDF document (max. 10 MB and ten pages).
  • The file name should be: surname_name_category; for example: martin_bilbao_art_science_technology_and_society.
  • All documentation must be submitted in Spanish, Basque, or English. Where Spanish or Basque is used, applicants must also attach a short summary in English. Otherwise, the panel of judges reserves the right to reject the project submitted.
