To mark its 75th anniversary, the Goethe-Institut is bringing the world to Berlin: in collaboration with the Berlin-Pankow Public Library, the International Library of Things is creating a global showcase of sustainability in action. On Wednesday, 29 April 2026 at 4pm, the project will launch at the Heinrich‑Böll Library with a hybrid opening event and a hands-on workshop featuring kitchen utensils from the collection. In the following weeks, objects from the entire Goethe-Institutnetwork will arrive – everyday items in their regions of origin, but often surprisingly new in Germany: from traditional musical instruments and kitchen tools to games and handicrafts.

The objects represent the cultural diversity of the Goethe-Institut's worldwide network and invite visitors to experience stories, traditions, and practices firsthand. Workshops and other activities for adults, children, and families make it possible to try things out on site; all objects can also be borrowed and thus used in a resource-saving manner – sharing instead of owning.

Until 24 October 2026 all items can be borrowed from the Heinrich‑Böll Library. After that, they will rotate through the libraries in the Pankow district, remaining available for loan to anyone interested.

The project is inspired by the Goethe-Institut Bratislava's first library of things, which has been considered an innovative model of sustainable library work since 2016. The anniversary edition now presents the first curated collection from around the world – a living symbol of exchange, creativity, and shaping the future together.
