Statement by the Goethe-Institut on the current situation in the Middle East

Munich, October 2023, updated on November 7, 2023.

We are appalled by Hamas' inhumane attack on Israel and condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the many victims and their families. We are deeply concerned about further attacks and developments. We must stop the aggression against Israel, prevent further escalations and protect the civilian population in the entire region. We are in close contact with our colleagues in Israel and all parts of the Palestinian territories. Our thoughts are with them and with all our partners.

The rising number of civilian casualties is shocking. All people have the right to live in peace and without fear. The Goethe-Institut is a place of discussion and peaceful exchange wherever it operates. We reject all forms of antisemitism, racism and misanthropy and, together with our partners in cultural and educational work, we stand up for universal human rights. Regardless of the hardening resentment and violence, we want to continue to pursue this at our locations in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ramallah and Gaza.

We are convinced that a ceasefire is urgently needed in view of the catastrophic situation in Gaza. Sufficient and unhindered corridors to supply the civilian population are absolutely necessary. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages held by Hamas.
