Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain, Death in Venice - who doesn't know these masterpieces by the Nobel Prize winner for literature and important writer of the 20th century?
But Thomas Mann was not only an outstanding storyteller, he was also a committed political thinker. From the 1920s onwards, the initially ‘apolitical observer’ developed into a resolute voice for democracy. He wrote numerous essays and gave fiery speeches - including the famous ‘German Address - Appeal to Reason’ in 1930. After emigrating, he continued his fight against National Socialism via BBC radio and addressed ‘German listeners’ directly with powerful messages.
On the occasion of his 150th birthday on 6 June 2025, the Goethe-Institut Brussels is offering a special course on Thomas Mann's political work for alumni of the European Network German with at least B2 level.
