State election in Saxony-Anhalt

Open to EU staff and civil servants from EU Member States and candidate countries who have professional links with the EU institutions

On 6 September, a new state parliament will be elected in Saxony-Anhalt. Although the federal state, with a population of around two million, is one of Germany’s smaller states (by way of comparison: Berlin has around 3.7 million, Bavaria 13.25 million and North Rhine-Westphalia just under 18 million inhabitants), the election could be of great political and social significance. For the first time, there is a possibility that an AfD politician could become Minister-President of a federal state.

Politicians and society have been preparing for this scenario for months. Among other things, discussions are focusing on constitutional amendments to strengthen democratic institutions, as well as various coalition models. This section of the special course centres on which political constellations are conceivable and what consequences the election result could have for Saxony-Anhalt and the Federal Republic of Germany.
