PLOT

I Am My Own Woman is an adaptation of the autobiographical book of the same name by Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a trans woman and pioneer of German LGBTQ+ history. The film follows her through her bourgeois childhood under the tyranny of a Nazi father, her work as a museum curator, and her sexual and kinky explorations. Praunheim shot this staged documentary in close collaboration with Mahlsdorf, who alternates between opening up in front of the camera, interacting with the actors, and playing herself.
