From the producers ofToni Erdmannand based on actor Joachim Meyerhoff's bestselling autobiographical novel comes a bittersweet true story about a young man caught between two worlds. After the death of his brother, twenty-year-old Joachim is unexpectedly accepted into Munich's renowned Otto Falckenberg acting school andmoves into the villa with hisgrandparents, Inge and Hermann. Between the bizarre disciplines of drama school and the eccentric, mostly alcohol-fueled rituals of his grandparents, Joachim tries to find his place in the world — without quite knowing what role he plays in it.
Directed with irony and warmth in equal measure by Simon Verhoeven (himself the son and grandson of actors and directors and known for Welcome to Germany), the film is a bravura ensemble piece set in early-1990s Munich, where loss and absurdity share the same household.
The film was #1 at the German box office on release with over 1 million admissions in its first 16 days.
