Talking About the Weather (Alle reden übers Wetter, Germany 2022, 89 min)

Clara has made it: she's traded her working-class village in the former East for an independent life in Berlin, teaching philosophy while finishing her PhD. Between an affair with one of her students and her prickly friendship with her thesis advisor Margot, she has little time left for her 15-year-old daughter Emma, who mostly lives with her father. When Clara returns home for her mother's birthday, three generations of women come together under one roof — and the price of the freedom Clara chose comes due.
Pinske, previously assistant to Maren Ade on Toni Erdmann, brings the same unsparing eye for class and self-delusion to her own debut, made as her graduation film from the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. Anne Schäfer carries the film's contradictions —ambitious and evasive, sympathetic and unlikeable— in a performance built on what is withheld rather than said.
Shot in a taut back-and-forth between Kreuzberg and the rural Uckermark, Talking About the Weather is a film about what it costs a woman to become the person she chose to be and what that choice costs the mother and daughter she leaves waiting.
