This is a photo story of 19 year old Temesgen and his friends. They earn their living by collecting discarded plastic bottles across the city and selling it by the kilo to buyers near the “Kebena” river in Addis Ababa. This photo series shows the risks these industrious youth face as they go about their daily life. We can especially see how lack of clean water forces them to rely on bottled water for drinking, and the grimy river for keeping their clothes and themselves clean.

This photo story conducted from two perspectives by Bemnet Fekadu Tsige and Mekdes Ababu offers a glimpse into the lives of Temesgen and the other marginalised members of society involved in his line of work.

The story of Bemnet Fekadu is part of the online exhibition for the workshop Water in Ethiopia
