Somerset House Studios continue its annual collaboration with Goethe-Institut London on an international residency programme to support a Germany-based female or non-binary artist working with music and sound, in partnership with CTM, Berlin’s festival for adventurous music and art.

From January 2026 on Hanne Lippard will be joining the residency. Her artistic practice lies at the confluence of spoken and written word and her work is conveyed through a variety of disciplines, predominantly sound-installations and performance. Her work reflects on the abstraction of language and our ability to exist in playback, struggling with standardisation, inclusive logic, and a certain automatism of everyday language.

By appropriating content from the public sphere, she investigates how the rise in digital communication and mediation is reprogramming our relationship to language. Lippard intertwines found text with her own material, which she then manipulates through a variety of devices, such as repetition, the shifting of intonation, or the exploitation of homonyms, in order to formulate musings on contemporary life.

The residency supports the development of a new work commissioned in collaboration with Somerset House Studios and CTM Festival. The work will be presented as part of Somerset House Studios’ bi-annual series of experimental music and performance, Assembly, in 2026, and at CTM Festival in 2027.
