Michael Hofmann on Translation
Turning Novels into English
Man Booker International Prize
He’s the celebrated translator of literary greats including Herta Müller, Thomas Bernhard and Peter Stamm, and this year Michael Hofmann was also a judge of the Man Booker International Prize. Today, he is joined by two of the translators shortlisted for the 2018 Prize, Frank Wynne (Vernon Subutex by Virginie Despentes) and Jennifer Croft (Flights by Olga Tokarczuk), along with translator Antonia Lloyd-Jones to discuss the joys and challenges of interpreting novels for an English-speaking audience.
