German Week 2025

Shout Out For German – Looking back on a successful German Week 2025

From 17 to 21 March 2025, the first German Week took place in the United Kingdom, an exciting and informative week dedicated to the German language, organised by the German Embassy in London, the Goethe-Institut UK and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The Goethe–Instituts in London and Glasgow provided teachers across the country with a wide range of interactive resources and activities for German Week to promote the German language and culture in creative and innovative ways. These ranged from various free taster German clubs and courses to music workshops and numerous other online and in-person events for all year groups, which were used by over 140 schools with a total of more than 16,000 pupils.

A special German Day for A-level students at the Goethe-Institut London and popular teaching resources for teachers rounded off the programme. Many schools also added their own creative touch, whether through presentations, competitions or special German lunch menus.

Participants were encouraged to share their contributions on social media, which led to an impressive response. Creative contributions such as pictures, videos and infographics were shared using the hashtags #ShoutOutForGerman and #Gimagine. The hashtag #ShoutOutForGerman was used 2,300 times, and according to an initial evaluation by the German Embassy in London, the campaign reached up to 4.2 million people.

The diversity of the shared posts reflected the numerous activities of German Week, demonstrated the participants' creative engagement with the German language and documented their work with the Goethe-Institut's user-friendly resources.

A particularly popular topic was the question ‘What is your favourite German word?’, which led to lively activity in the comments and increased engagement beyond the participating schools. This interactive and personal approach made German Week 2025 an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

The campaign was a great success and gave many students the opportunity to discover the German language and culture in a new and exciting way. We would like to say thank you and look forward to the next German Week in 2026!

Making the Case for German in the UK

German Week was organised as part of the Goethe-Institut UK's GIMAGINE education initiative, which promotes the teaching and learning of German in primary and secondary schools in the United Kingdom. The project is also closely linked to the initiative Making the Case for German, which is carried out in cooperation with the German Embassy and the DAAD and includes symposia, networking meetings and activities such as German Week, which promote learning German in a fun and innovative way.

The offers presented during German Week brought thousands of schoolchildren and their families into contact with the Goethe-Institut's GIMAGINE resources, which will remain available to them and anyone else interested via our website.
