Photobook as a Visual Culture


Expert Markus Schaden about the photo book scene in Indonesia, Germany and Japan!
At the backdrop of the Photo Book Exhibition 2016, the founder of the Photo Book Museum Germany shares his impressions and experiences about the the Indonesian, Germany, Japan photo book scene and gives an outlook to its future!
 

Markus Schaden:

In 1995 Markus Schaden founded "Schaden.com", a publisher and a bookshop specializing in photobooks. Schaden.com has published over 100 photo books and participated in countless international festivals and congresses. In addition, the publishing house has organized more than 250 photographic events.

Markus Schaden was vice-president of the German Society of Photography (DGPh), a member of the editorial board of the FOAM magazine and a jury member at numerous photo festivals, including Arles, Paris, Krakow, Amsterdam and Los Angeles. In 2008, Schaden worked as a curator of the LaBata Matrix, a multi-faceted research project on photobooks, as well as Ed  Van der Elskens Fotoroman "Love on the Left Bank" in Paris and Istanbul. 

In cooperation with the Goethe Institute and the Lichtblickschule Köln, Schaden Fotobuch has mastered master classes in Amsterdam, Jakarta, Arles and Cologne. He also gives regular lectures at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne and at the Fachhochschule in Dortmund. In 2014, Schaden founded the PhotoBook Museum, the first museum devoted to international photography book exhibitions. After a successful opening exhibition in Cologne, the PhotoBookMuseum will be on tour, with upcoming events in Krakow, Kassel, Oslo, Shanghai, Paris and Los Angeles.
