Instagram Live with Maharani Mancanagara

How can we heterogenize concepts of institutionalized memory and public history writing and share new multiple narratives? In 2018, Bandung-based artist Maharani Mancanagara exhibited the narrative "Hikayat Wanatentrem" in the form of comics, performances, installations and drawings. In this work she artistically transforms the reports of political prisoners about their exile on the prison island Buru, including the experiences of her own grandfather. Based on the question of how subjective story(s) and memories can have a place in cultural education in Indonesia, Maharani invites designer and storyteller Misha Ahmad Azizia to a public brainstorming session on Instagram Live. Together, they want to further develop "Hikayat Wanatentrem" and thus make the stories of the survivors of 1965 accessible, especially to young people, in the form of artistic board games or a game app.

During her Instagram Takeover on AMAN, Maharani gives deeper insights into her artistic work over the past months and talks about the support of various villages in Wot Batu, which she initiated together with friends during the pandemic.

For AMAN (Agenda Seniman) local artists and musicians take over Goethe-Institut Bandungs´ Instagram channel and present current works as well as their everyday life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Every first Saturday of the month, we present a live session with a studio visit or a jam session followed by a discussion on @goetheinstitut_bandung.

Born in Padang 1990, Maharani Mancanagara is an artist who lives and works in Bandung, Indonesia. She graduated in 2013 from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, majoring in Graphic Arts. Many of her works are drawings, mixed media, and installations. Through her work, she aims to probe private stories, whose scattered narratives accompany past events, and then reassemble them in different ways.

Storyteller and Designer Misha Ahmad Azizia graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung in 2013 with a focus on Graphics Arts. His artwork can be found in the theatrical performances EPIC, Merchant of Emotion, Mendiang Republic, Taraksa and Drupadi.id. Misha was also involved in the creation of property for the staging of the 2018 Asian Games. Misha is currently pioneering storytelling using the shadow puppet medium.
