Cultural Entrepreneurship Hub Solo: Connecting artistic practice and entrepreneurial perspectives to drive local culture and economy

In the second edition of the series Innovation and Innovators, Nancy Margried and Zaini Alif will share their journey as cultural and social entrepreneurs that mobilize the society. They will talk about their motivations, their inspirations, their failures, successes, and best practices to inspire students and engage diverse audiences: young cultural practitioners in Surakarta, lecturers, communities, businesses, local governments, and many others.

Nancy Margried co-founded Batik Fractal, a social enterprise focusing on empowering traditional artisans trough technology. In 2009, Nancy and her team created a parametric design software called jBatik. The software creates points of access for younger generations to engage with the preservation of batik as national heritage, and enables the older generations of batik artisans to participate in the digital economy. Having successfully trained 3,000 artisans and students in Indonesia to use the software, Nancy now concentrates on creating digital inclusivity by focusing on women artisans and technology.

Zaini Alif identifies and reintroduces traditional toys and games as a way to support children in building essential social skills they once gained from analogue games and play and that are left behind with the growing popularity of digital games. In 2015, he founded Komunitas Hong, a study and documentation center for traditional toys and games to preserve and promote traditional games. Until now, Zaini has collected 2,500 types of traditional games from Aceh to Papua, as well as 400 types of traditional international games from 10 countries.

The discussion will be moderated by Cultural Entrepreneurship Hub Solo Manager, Yudhi Soerjoatmodjo.

About the Cultural Entrepreneurship Hub Solo

A joint project by Goethe-Institut, Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship and ISI Surakarta, the Cultural Entrepreneurship Hub Solo aims to enable young artists and cultural communities to be more entrepreneurial – helping them to achieve not only sustainable creative and financial success for themselves but also contribute to the social inclusion, economic empowerment, and cultural revitalization of their communities.

In early May, the hub officially kicked off with a 3-day closed Training-for-Trainers Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for selected lecturers of ISI Surakarta and a presentation for students of ISI Surakarta and the creative community in Surakarta.

Until end of 2018, the hub will present a series of monthly open presentations introducing one established cultural/social entrepreneur from greater Jakarta and Java per session and offer coaching and mentoring for the student start-up teams that were selected for the Student Entrepreneurship Program (PMW) 2018 of ISI Surakarta.
