Online talkshow - Goethe-Institut Indonesien and Project Multatuli

Goethe-Institut Indonesien in cooperation with Project Multatuli invites readers to discuss the public trust in mass media in general and how to increase reader support in quality media. This event is supported by Remotivi, Konde.co, Jaring.id, IDJN, Yayasan Pantau, and IndoProgress, which, together with Project Multatuli, have established an informal association of independent media organizations and journalists.

Since the advent of the internet, online media have emerged and mushroomed. People no longer need to buy newspapers to read the news. Online media provide fast and free information. Unfortunately, the free news is slowly shedding quality and accuracy in favor of speed.

The page is filled with advertisements that sometimes cover the news, making it inconvenient to read. Dependence on advertisers and oligarchs is also a big problem. On top of that, many journalists who are not paid according to the minimum wage standard.

Print media has also experienced a decrease in the number of subscribers. They are forced to adapt by going digital and sticking to the subscription model. This is a challenge and there is no evidence that this works.

No single media organization in Indonesia bases its business model on funding from readers or the public (audience revenue). Many mainstream media outlets rely on advertising because they cannot completely rely on customers.

In recent years, a number of media outlets have explored paywalls; these require readers to pay and subscribe to read their special reports.

This discussion will bring together academics, mainstream media practitioners, alternative media practitioners, and of course readers to answer the questions:
What should the media do to increase reader trust and support? And what can readers do to help improve the quality of journalism in Indonesia?
