Galeri Nasional Indonesia

A series of events designed to respond to the exhibition narrative, which is divided into five parts: Convivialities, Allegiances, Festivities, Kinship, and Forces.

Exhibition Tour with curator Grace Samboh. 

On each tour, Grace will select a specific narrative and highlighted works to be discussed. Tour participants are invited to ask questions and spark conversation during the tour.

Nayamullah, Gema, and the Allies… 

is a sound workshop and concert hosted by Nayamullah (artists Julian Abraham “Togar” and Saleh Husein) with composer Gema Swaratyagita. This workshop departs from Togar's sound work, A Gesture (2016), which is part of the exhibition, and is attended by eight participants selected through limited calls. Exhibition visitors can enjoy the concert while in the gallery.

Kencan Museum (Museum Date)

Call and Response 

is a weekly film screening curated by Lisabona Rahman (moving image preservation and presentation consultant) and Raslene (researcher and artist). The films to be shown showcase struggles for freedom documented to spread calls for allies or convey arguments in favor of ideologies.

Tracing the History of East Flood Canal (BKT) 

is a bicycle tour whose route is taken from Ary “Jimged” Sendy's work Traces of Home (2010), where he recorded evictions in the name of land acquisition for the construction of BKT. The tour is intended for a small group in collaboration with Manual Jakarta and is guided by Jimged, JJ Rizal (historian) and Ng Swan Ti (photography educator and BKT resident). For a chance to join the tour, take part in the giveaway on @manualjakarta Instagram channel.

Building a House 

is a series of workshops and performance initiated by artist Marintan Sirait. The work has been shown since 1994 and is an attempt to escape the traffic jams, vehicle noise and pollution, shouts and fights, and everyday life driven by the acceleration of time. The workshops will be attended by 15 participants selected by open call, while the performance is open to exhibition visitors.

Alkisah… (Once Upon a Time) 

is a storytelling workshop designed by curator Grace Samboh to collect diverse stories about the exhibition. Each workshop participant is invited to record and publish a short podcast (5-7 minutes).

My Collage, My Family 

is a collage-making workshop led by the artist Ika Vantiani for children 7-12 years old. Workshop participants will be invited to tell stories through collages about one of the residents of the house in a room within the house they use the most.

Kenduri Rasa

To conclude the public programs within the exhibition, we will host a lesehan-style banquet that explores flavors from across the Indonesian archipelago. On the menu is a selection of dishes from Mustikarasa, a book of recipes from different areas in Indonesia compiled by President Sukarno. Artistic Director Enin Supriyanto will be the guest cook for the night, while historian JJ Rizal will host the special occasion.

For safety reasons, the event will be held in limited capacity and food is served individually. We will provide Covid-19 antigen test for each guest upon registration.

ABout "Para Sekutu yang Tidak Bisa Berkata Tidak" (The Acquiescent Allies)

Just like your all-time favorite songs, this exhibition presents a selection of works from the collections of Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin, MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, and Singapore Art Museum in a fresh perspective. The exhibition is curated by Grace Samboh, with Anna-Catharina Gebbers, Gridthiya Gaweewong and June Yap as part of the long-term project Collecting Entanglements and Embodied Histories. The exhibition runs from 28 January to 27 February 2022 at Galeri Nasional Indonesia.

Galeri Nasional - Pre-Book of Visitation

Collecting Entanglements And Embodied Histories

is a dialogue between the collections of Galeri Nasional Indonesia, MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and Singapore Art Museum. Initiated by the Goethe-Institut, the project manifests as four exhibitions with distinctive curatorial narratives in the four collaborating institutions, regular online public programs livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube, a video essay series by art practitioners on selected artists and more. The curatorial team consists of Anna-Catharina Gebbers, Grace Samboh, Gridthiya Gaweewong, and June Yap.
