In December 2022, Goethe-Institut Bandung invites everyone interested in German language or German literature to another virtual reading club – our Leseclub. Regularly held every month since 2021, Goethe-Institut Bandung collaborates with Bbbbookclub, different local communities as well as students and educators of German Language Study Programs from various higher education institutions in Bandung. Leseclub aims at introducing modern German literature which has been already translated into Indonesian. More than discussing the mere contents of the selected books, Leseclub also gives space to talk about relevant issues related to the books in a broader sense and their relationships to German culture and everyday life from films, grieving, to social inequality in 2022.

In this December’s edition, participants will take turns reading excerpts and talking about the book 'Herr der Diebe' or 'Prince of Thieves' by Cornelia Funke, the so-called J.K Rowling from Germany which will be reviewed by Meita Eryanti from BBBBooklcub. This book tells the story of brothers Prosper and Bo who fled from Hamburg, Germany, to Venice, Italy, to escape their uncle and aunt after their mother died. Their uncle and aunt had intended to separate Bo and Prosper by sending Prosper to a boarding school. In Venice they meet a group of street children who live in a former cinema building and embark on an adventure with a boy who calls himself the Prince of Thieves (Pangeran Pencuri).

After discussing ‘Pangeran Pencuri’ book, the event will continue with a discussion about the current popularity of German literature translated into Indonesian and its acceptance by Indonesian readers. In this event we invite Hendarto Setiadi, translator of the book 'Prince Thief', and Claudia Kaiser, Vice President Business Development of the Frankfurt Book Fair. Partners from the German Language Study Program at STBA Yapari ABA Bandung also join the conversation.

Registration is now available until 08 December 2022 at this link:
