How Does the Process and Systematization of the “Banality of Evil” Occur?

Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) stands as one of the most influential philosophers and political theorists of the 20th century, particularly renowned for her analysis of the “banality of evil” and totalitarianism, especially within the context of Nazi fascism. Born in Hannover, Germany, to a Jewish family, she fled to France in 1933 and later sought refuge in the United States after World War II.

This film highlights Arendt's critical examination of Adolf Eichmann's trial. Captured in Argentina by the Israeli secret service, Mossad, Eichmann was then tried in Jerusalem in 1961 for his involvement in the Holocaust. Arendt covered the trial for The New Yorker, which later published her reports as the book Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil in 1963. She critiqued the trial's potential to become merely a “show trial,” focusing on judging individuals or “ordinary people” who did not [have the space to] question or consider intentions beyond following orders and the prevailing system—rather than scrutinizing the system or ideology itself.

Half a century after her death, amidst the rise of mass deportations, wars, genocides, and various crises of trust and questions regarding political systems and institutions (such as elections, parliaments, or the United Nations and Human Rights as universal rights), it becomes crucial to revisit Hannah Arendt's work. This involves discussing the relevance and contextualization of the systematization of the “banality of evil” within today's political realities, both in Indonesia and globally.
