Director: Hannes Stöhr, colour, 93 min., 2004
What kind of event, the filmmaker Hannes Stöhr asked himself, can be experienced with equal intensity across the continent of Europe, can be vivid and immediate in several different locations at once, and can thus serve as a simple dramatic device to link unrelated incidents thousands of miles apart? If it's not an act of terror that shocks the world, or the death of a Pope, but something positive, what kind of occasion has such mass appeal and creates such excitement and anticipation? A referendum on the European Constitution, perhaps?
Where Europe is concerned there is surely only one answer: a major football match.
