Bernadette or Benni, as she wants to be called, a delicate girl with impetuous energy, is a "system breaker". This is the name given to children who radically break every rule, consistently refuse structures and gradually fall through all the grids of German child and youth welfare. Wherever the nine-year-old is admitted, she is thrown out again after a short time. And that is exactly what she is after, because she longs to live with her mother again. A woman who is overwhelmed by the unpredictability of her own daughter.

Based on her multi-award-winning screenplay, Nora Fingscheidt directs an intense drama about a child's irrepressible longing for love and security and the potential for violence that lies therein. At the same time, the film describes the tireless attempts of educators and psychologists to create a perspective for such children with respect, trust and confidence, who threaten to destroy others and themselves through their unpredictable outbursts.

Katja's life in Hamburg is completely derailed when her husband Nuri and their son Rocco are killed in a terrorist bombing. She hits rock bottom, starts taking drugs and contemplates suicide. Eventually, the police identify and arrest the perpetrators: André und Edda, a neo-Nazi couple. It was André's own father, who led the police on the right track. Yet Katja's hope that the murderers receive their sentence in court is shattered. Following a harrowing trial, in which Nuri's best friend Danilo serves as Katja's lawyer, Edda und André are acquitted for want of evidence. Katja is devastated, but soon her desperation gives way to an urge for vigilante justice.
