Crossing political and literary borders, Words on the Street will take you on a journey across the cultural landscape, in an evening of celebrity readings of translated work by contemporary European authors. Hear voices from ten European countries, across a range of beautiful cultural venues in Dublin 2.
Germany and Poland will be sharing their Words on the Street event in the National Library of Ireland. Lisa Lambe, the highly-acclaimed singer, will read from Katy Derbyshire's translation of Clemens Meyer's novel Bricks and Mortar. Bricks and Mortar is the story of the sex trade in a big city in the former GDR, from just before 1989 to the present day, charting the development of the industry from absolute prohibition to full legality in the 20 years following the reunification of Germany.
The first reading at each venue will start at 6:30pm and the last one at 9pm. Each reading takes approximately 15 minutes and is repeated on the hour and half hour. The German readings will take place at 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm, and 8:30 pm.
This event is free and no booking is necessary – just join the trail at any point!
