As Hitler is appointed Reich Chancellor in 1933, it quickly becomes imminent that Anna’s father – a renowned theatre critic and public opponent of the Nazis – has to flee the country. Anna, her brother, and her mother are set to follow him to Zürich to find that they cannot stay there either. After a stop in Paris, the family decides to leave for London. In all haste Anna is forced to leave behind her favourite cuddly toy, a pink rabbit, and adapt to her new life on the run.
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is based on the semi-autobiographic novel by Judith Kerr, which was first published in 1971 in English. From the viewpoint of nine-year-old Anna, the film tells a story of flight and family cohesion during most difficult times. The film by Oscar-winning director Caroline Link was awarded the prize for Best Children’s Film at German Film Awards 2020 and won the Bavarian Film Award for Best Children’s and Youth Film.
