Swiss author Thomas Hürlimann reads from his new novel Der Rote Diamant
We are delighted to be able to welcome the prominent Swiss author Thomas Hürlimann on 7 September 2022 at Goethe-Institut Irland for a reading from his new novel
Der Rote Diamant, which has just been published.
For forty years now Thomas Hürlimann in his numerous novels, novellas, dramas and essays holds up a literary mirror to our time and to his country. He has produced an impressive oeuvre that is elegantly written, rich in perspective, full of humour, reflective and critical. In his autobiographically-rooted writing he reflects the cultural and societal changes which he has witnessed and which he has participated in. Thus he explores big themes like love, life, and death and also asks questions about the role of tradition and transcendence today. Among his main and best-known works are a novel about his father
Der große Kater (1998),
Fräulein Stark (2002) and
Vierzig Rosen (2006), a novel about his mother.
The background to
Der Rote Diamant are the eight years Hürlimann spent in the boarding school of the benedict monastery Einsiedeln in the Swiss Alps. Hürlimann, born in 1950, thematizes the influence of his catholic upbringing and what the 1968 rebellion meant for him and his generation. It is a fascinating novel that wittingly combines a coming-of-age-story, a criminalistic quest, philosophical reflection and a satirical portrait of the 1960s.
