International Online Book Club
At our first international book club of the New Year, we welcome the prizewinning author Emine Sevgi Özdamar who will present her book Ein von Schatten begrenzter Raum (A Space Contained by Shadows).
After the coup in 1971 the military hold both the lives and dreams of the Turkish people captive. Artists, leftists and intellectuals fear for their existence, including the narrator who flees Istanbul by sea to Europe. She travels with the wish to become an actress and the abslute desire to make known and keep alive the cultural wealth of the country from which she has been so abruptly cut off. At the same time she doesn't want to be reduced to her mere origins in the "zoo of languages".
All are welcome to join this live online event, and it's not required that you have already read the book. Participation is free of charge and the discussion takes place in German.
Emine Sevgi Özdamar grew up in Istanbul, where she attended drama school. In the mid-seventies she went to Berlin and Paris and worked with the theatre directors Benno Besson, Matthias Langhoff and Claus Peymann. She took on numerous film roles and has been writing plays, novels and short stories since 1982. Emine Sevgi Özdamar lives in Berlin.
