Action, comedy, animation, drama – expect this and more from Short Shorts from Europe Film Festival – a selection of European short films of eleven member countries of EUNIC Ireland. Let Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain entertain you with a variety of genres from contemporary, cutting-edge filmmakers. Cork International Film Festival and TUS Limerick School of Art and Design (Clonmel) will also present short films from Ireland on the programme.
As the German contribution, the Goethe-Institut Irland presents “It Doesn’t Have to Be Today”, a film by the award-winning director Sophia Groening.
All films in English or with English subtitles.
After the screening the audience will be asked to vote for their favourite film via their smartphone.

“I Lost Myself When I Found You”

A young woman recalls a recent unsettling relationship in this eerie poetic experimental piece by the sea.
Chelsea Muscat is a writer and director, originally from Gozo. Her family immigrated to the States where she became the first college graduate of her family, receiving a Film BFA. Her film “Lost Kid Wanderer” was a recipient of the 2022 Inside Out Toronto 2SLGBTQ + Focus Fund. Her work often explores themes of love, abandonment, and isolation.

“Nestor”

Nestor, a man with several obsessive-compulsive behaviours lives in an unstable houseboat which never stops oscillating.
João Gonzalez (1996) is a Portuguese film director, animator and illustrator. In 2022 he became the first Portuguese animation filmmaker to be recognised at the Cannes Film Festival with the short film “Ice Merchants”. This project also became the first Portuguese short film ever to be nominated for an Oscar.

“Castilla mal”

How is the link with the place of origin when the need to thrive forces you to leave it? Leave because the future is outside. Leave to find root. Leave to be able to be. “Castilla mal” is the experience of a double tear: that of depopulation and that of one’s own identity.
Sara Rivero is especially known as an actress in TV series. In the theatre she has worked as an actress and playwright, and in cinema highlights her participation in “Lo siento mi amor” and “Lope Enamorado”. Sara Rivero currently investigates the limits and coexistence between the audiovisual and the performative.

Four friends are sitting at a square in Cologne Finkenberg, looking for the right words and punctuation marks for a text message to a girl which will never be sent.
Sophia Groening, born in Düsseldorf in 1994, graduated in Philosophy and Visual Sciences at the University of Witten/Herdecke prior to pursuing a diploma at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Her first short film, co-directed with Jan Bonny, premiered at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival. Her latest film “It Doesn’t Have to Be Today” won the German Short Film Award 2022.

“Farewell“

Tired and sad, Lovro fills his bathtub. His gaze drifts to a drop of water rolling slowly out of the tap. As it hits the water, it reminds him of the day he and his grandpa first went fishing.
Leon Vidmar graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Ljubljana. He furthered his knowledge by attending Academy of Fine Arts in Poland, ŠUGLA Street Theatre School in Ljubljana and the Performers House school of performative arts in Denmark. He works as animator, production designer, props master and camera assistant.

“L‘Ogre“ / "The Ogre”

A mother and her child live under the same roof as the ogre, a cruel and violent creature. When the monster's anger shakes the walls of the house, there is only one way out: hide and make no noise. Hush! Here he comes…
In 2005, Aurélien Pira started his career in animation. Graduated from the Haute École Albert Jacquard in 2009, he has since been compositing supervisor on series projects such as “Nächst Statioun” and “Barababor” at Zeilt Productions. With the creation of his short film like “L’Ogre“, Aurélien gave life to Cyril Bossmann’s idea.

“In Ten Minutes“

Two women are talking while waiting for the bus. Their conversation takes an unexpected turn in the end.
Christian Nirca is a Moldavian/Greek cinematographer, director and writer. He is the founder of the literature site itravelpoetry.com and of MasterART, a production company of various masterclasses. “In Ten Minutes” is the first short film that he has written and directed.

“Airborne“

“Airborne” is a surreal animation that connects the world of flying machines with the kingdom of flora and fauna. Engrossed in the fight, the pilot loses his target which leads to tragedy. From the tragedy, however, a new beautiful life is awakened. “Airborne” shows us that even aggression can be turned into love and that one sometimes has to lose in order to be born again.
Andrzej Jobczyk was born in 1985 and was raised around art and nature. He graduated from the National Film School in Łódź, Poland. In his works he combines biology, exact sciences and minimalist surrealism. “Airborne” is his third animation for which he has received numerous awards at international film festivals.

“Supermarket“

A seven-year-old girl asks her broke mother for biscuits. Mustering her courage, she goes to a neighbourhood supermarket to steal biscuits. A young man stops her. Not for the sake of honesty, but to prevent her from being caught...
Director and screenwriter Pierre Dugowson graduated from Louis Lumière School (ENSLL). He started in the film industry as a camera assistant before becoming a camera operator and director for television, and finally directing his first feature film "Ouvrez le chien" (starring Clovis Cornillac).

“Red Rabbit“
Dir: Rory Kerr, Animation/Comedy/Horror, Ireland 2022, 4’50’’, English
A rabbit struggles to find peace and relaxation at home. These attempts are thwarted by a destructive shoulder devil, who takes glee in ruining any chance of tranquility.
Rory Kerr is an Irish animator/filmmaker, who has worked on many independent and studio projects, including various music videos and content for acts like Hozier, Villagers, Wolf Alice, Courtney Barnett.

“In The Upper Room“

A small mole regularely visits his blind grandfather. The seasons of the year go by, both grow older and important questions arise. Alexander Gratzer’s graduation film “In The Upper Room” was inspired by several childhood memories of his grandfather. It has been shown at film festivals around the world and received several awards.
Alexander Gratzer studied Painting at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (2012-2018). During this time, he decided to concentrate on the creation and production of animated short films. Further studies led him to the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, where he had the chance to work with a team of animators.

“Poulaphouca“
Dir.: Ian Fallon, Documentary, Ireland 2022, 7’, English
Voices of the past bring to light the dark history of a lake in County Wicklow. "Poulaphouca" (Irish for "the Ghost's Hole") is a darkly experimental documentary that tells the stories of those who lived in what was once a peaceful valley, before it was flooded in the 1940's to create the Poulaphouca Reservoir. This film is an unsettling tale of displacement, grief and loss.
Ian Fallon is a filmmaker from Kildare and a final year student at the National Film School at IADT. Majoring in directing, his grad film “AMŒBA” will begin its festival run this year. In March 2023, he won the Youth Music Video Competition at the First Cut Youth Film Festival.

“Nico“

"Nico" delves into the topic of gender identity as we follow Marah, who identifies as non-binary navigating a gender stereotypical world. The focus is on a characters’ personal memories as they look back on their life. The film prominently features the use of colour to symbolize our character’s experience with gender stereotypes, emphasizing the people who do not fall into such roles.
Dailies Productions is a team of four animation enthusiasts who study Digital Animation at TUS Clonmel. Having formed a strong friendship from the get-go, they worked together to create “Nico” during their second year of the course. The team members currently specialise in different areas ranging from concept design to animation and compositing.
Presented by TUS Limerick School of Art and Design (Clonmel) in collaboration with The Richard Harris International Film Festival.
