Rostock-Lichtenhagen, August 1992: In a prefabricated housing estate, unemployed youths are fighting against their boredom and frustration. At night, they riot against the police and foreigners. The clashes become so threatening that the authorities decide to evacuate the Roma from Romania who are housed in an asylum seekers’ centre. The Vietnamese residents of the so-called ‘Sunflower House’ are left behind as potential victims. The riots escalate, but the police withdraw, leading to a night of violence – witnessed by a gawping and applauding crowd. In WE ARE YOUNG. WE ARE STRONG, the young filmmaker Burhan Qurbani reconstructs the infamous night of national shame.

Presented by Terenure Library and Goethe-Institut Irland.
